Friday 3rd September is Starts at Home day - a day when housing associations up and down the country celebrate supported housing and the positive impact it makes to thousands of lives.

Created by the National Housing Federation (NHF) in 2015 following government changes to funding for supported housing, Starts at Home day helps to raise the profile of supported housing.

Now in its fifth year, we are joining the NHF and its members across the country by sharing the positive impact of our supported housing from the perspective of our colleagues and customers.

“Living in supported housing helps build my independence and freedom – I’ve learnt how to do things for myself.”

“Being a Young People Support Worker is a very rewarding career. I get to support people and see the difference it makes, watching them tackling life challenges they never thought they would, growing in their independence, and being proud of them building a life in society”.

“I have worked in supported housing for many years and have seen lots of changes within the sector. Whilst processes, policies and procedures are constantly evolving, one constant is the problems that our clients face.

“Many of our clients haven’t had the best start in their lives and it can be difficult for them to change old habits or deal with deep rooted issues, however I have never lost my belief that we are in a tremendously important position and can have a positive effect on people’s lives.

“During my time, I have seen many clients thrive and appreciate the support offered to them, just having staff around that will spend time with them, listen to them and value them is sometimes all they need.

“Our staff wear many hats and are knowledgeable in numerous areas; the dedication that they show towards our client group always makes me feel proud of them.”
