Barbershop magazine
An Ashram Health and Social Care service
“How a haircut can help to break down barriers.”
Many people find it difficult to talk about mental health problems, but this is particularly true of men. Barbershop magazine defies the taboos to promote mental health and well-being amongst black and minority ethnic men by talking honestly and practically about health and well-being matters.
Engaging readers in discussions and with information about politics, culture and more, Barbershop’s content is varied and relevant. Previous features have included:
- Question-and-answer feature about what causes depression and how to cope with it
- An introduction to Ramadan
- A personal account of bipolar disorder
- How eating certain foods can improve your mental health
- Signposting to support organisations
- St Patrick's Day in Birmingham
- Comic strips.
The magazine is distributed in barbershops, where men often feel more comfortable opening up and discussing awkward topics
