Almost 40 lend a hand at first Caldmore ‘Dig it Day’
Almost 40 green-fingered volunteers rolled up their sleeves at the first of a number of ‘Dig it Days’ being held to transform a disused plot of land in Walsall into a community garden.
The volunteers gathered on Saturday (11 February) to mark routes for pathways, map out plots and prepare the land off Carless Street, Caldmore, for planting.
Caldmore Village Festival Group was supported by Caldmore Housing Association and other organisations to transform the land into a community garden, after it was leased to them by Walsall Housing Group.
Participants in the ‘Dig it Day’, which ran from 10am to 4pm, also made 10 bird boxes for the garden and gave their views on what they think should be grown there once it is completed.
Once finished, the garden will be used to host a range of community events and activities and local residents will also be able to grow their own fruit, vegetables and plants there.
Margot Lambert, Director for Communities and Arts for Caldmore Housing Association, and member of the Festival Group, said: “Despite temperatures of minus five, scores of people came out to lend a hand and support this fantastic initiative, which we think will make Caldmore an even better place to live.
“We would like to thank everyone who got involved on the day, including the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens and Groundwork for their brilliant support.”
The next ‘Dig it Day’ will take place on Saturday, 3 March. For more information about it, or the community garden project, call Margot Lambert on 0300 111 7000 or email margot.lambert@caldmorehousing.co.uk or email Alan Cheeseman on alancheesemanltd@aol.com
